Hard Labor

Letter to the Editor:

In his review of David Day's biography of Curtin ("Reluctant Warrior" February), John Edwards claimed that when Curtin died he "was the Australian Labor Party's longest serving prime minister since Federation".  This is not correct.  Curtin was Prime Minister from 7 October 1941 to 5 July 1945, a total of 1367 days.  Andrew Fisher was PM from 13 November 1908 to 2 June 1909 (201 days), from 29 April 1910 to 24 June 1913 (1152 days) and from 17 September 1914 to 27 October 1915 (405 days), a total of 1758 days.  Fisher is in fact the second-longest serving Labor PM after Bob Hawke (3,206 days), beating Chifley (1,620 days), Keating (1,543 days) and Curtin.
