ENVIRONMENT -- Global warming a lot of hot air

YOUR science reporter Geoff Strong appears to have joined the ranks of the global warming alarmists.  He asserts that "predictions" indicate higher levels of Greenhouse gases will cause "much more severe storms" (30/6).

I draw your attention to the authoritative monograph "Climate Change Science:  current understanding and uncertainties" prepared in 1995 jointly by the three Australian Science Academies (Technological Sciences and Engineering, Science and Social Sciences), which says "there is no evidence to suggest that the world in general, or Australia in particular, will be subject to more frequent extremes of climate".

Indeed, some arguments indicate that the reverse may be the case, and a recent computer study shows that a decrease in the frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones may occur under these conditions.

It is high time that informed scientists blew the whistle on such panic-mongering.
